The XR Culture project is transforming the way visitors experience cultural heritage in Europe, introducing innovative holographic museum experiences designed for modern travellers. Through cutting-edge use of 3D digitisation, artificial intelligence, and extended reality (XR), the project enhances access to heritage by turning it into interactive, immersive journeys.
At the core of this innovation is the AR hologram function within the 3D-heritage.eu platform, enabling cultural institutions to convert existing 3D models into engaging XR experiences for tourism and education. Using only a mobile phone and a simple foldable hologram pyramid, visitors can explore holographic projections of cultural landmarks — both inside museums and at outdoor heritage sites.
As part of this European initiative, six museums and cultural destinations have been selected to develop holographic postcards — a new format that combines physical travel with digital storytelling. Among them is Planet Sarajevo, a leading immersive museum in Sarajevo, representing Bosnia and Herzegovina in this innovative project.
This approach introduces a new dimension to cultural tourism in Sarajevo, offering visitors a unique way to experience the city’s heritage through interactive holograms and XR technology. By merging accessibility with creativity, XR Culture allows audiences to engage with history in a simple yet powerful way — without the need for complex equipment.
The project demonstrates how digital innovation can reshape tourism experiences, making culture more accessible, engaging, and relevant for future generations of travellers, learners, and explorers.
The Planet Sarajevo project was realized with the support of BH Telecom, Sarajevska Pivara, NLB Bank, and Kommerling, under the patronage of the Federal Ministry of Tourism and Environment and the City of Sarajevo.
