Some of the most beautiful songs are born from the simplest moments. The story of ‘Selma’, one of the most iconic songs from the former Yugoslavia, began not with a grand romance, but with a quiet encounter on a train platform—one that would forever connect Sarajevo to music history.
Who Was Selma?
Selma Borić was a young woman from Zenica who attended the All Girls’ High School in Sarajevo. Like many students at the time, she would travel home by train on weekends, moving between two cities and two rhythms of life.
On one such journey, she met the poet Vlado Dijak—a moment that would unknowingly become part of cultural history.
Their encounter was brief and almost ordinary. Dijak helped Selma by carrying her small, dark-red suitcase and walking her to the train. As she sat by a broken window, he called out a simple sentence: ‘Selma, don’t lean out of the window.’
From that single moment—from a glance, a feeling, and an unspoken affection—came the verses that would later become the song ‘Selma’.
From Poetry to a Legendary Song
Years later, those lines were transformed into music by Goran Bregović and performed by Željko Bebek, turning a quiet memory into one of the most beloved songs in the region.
What makes this story even more remarkable is that Selma herself did not know the song was about her. Only years later did she discover that she had become an immortal figure in music.
They never kissed. He never confessed his love. And yet, through a single sentence and a fleeting moment, Selma remained forever—Selma from the song.
